Most drivers are unaware of the free service that allows them to check that their car has been properly insured and that they will be able to drive on the roads while covered. Often delays in insuring vehicles means that they are not properly listed on the Motor Insurance Database which means drivers may be stopped by the police.

The AA is encouraging people to do a quick check online to make sure that their vehicle is insured. The AA has said that only seven per cent of people have used the free service, known as AskMID. The study also showed that only twenty per cent of people were aware that it exists. New rules that mean that insurance must be continuous and that people must make sure that their new insurance has come through when their old one runs out. Television advertising and information sent out with tax discs is informing people of the new rules and the AskMID service.

Director of the AA, Simon Douglas has said, “It’s rather disappointing to see these figures as it shows that people are not making sure they are complying with the new continuous insurance rules. People should be aware that the police use the database to find cars that are uninsured. Cameras are able to detect where these cars are and the police will be sent to intercept them. Simple errors on an insurance form can mean that people who think they are insured are actually not.

“Using the AskMID service is incredibly easy. You just have to enter your licence plate number and it will tell you whether you are insured. If you have insurance but are not listed as having any, speak to your insurance company immediately.” Estimates say that over a million cars are being driven in the UK without insurance.

New data has revealed that motorists could soon be hit by repair bills that are 10% higher than usual thanks to the summer taking its toll on their cars reliability. The warning comes from the specialist insurer Warranty Direct, who have disclosed a list of which car parts fail the most in the summer months between June-August.

The warmer and drier climes that we experience through the summer seem to take its toll on suspension and axle failures, which account for more than a quarter of the claims made to Warranty Direct. Major internal engine problems and engine cooling breakdowns account for 9.16% and 9.34% of claims respectively and can result in repair bills of as much as £7,239.

The average repair bill is 10% higher in the summer than in the winter and over 4 in 10 motorists make a claim between June-August, compared with 36% during the winter months. In 2010, 4/5 of the most costly repair bills occurred between the months of June and August.

Overall, the 10 components identified by Warranty Direct as most likely to cause a breakdown in the summer account for over 75% of claims during that period.

Brake and steering components are the next most likely items to fail during the summer – though equally susceptible in the winter – followed by the battery, transmission and ignition system.

Unsurprisingly, more air-conditioning malfunctions surface as temperatures climb, while turbochargers round off the top 10.

Duncan McClure Fisher of Warranty Direct said: “Cars are complex and sensitive to the environment they are subjected to.

“In these straightened times, anything a motorist can do to mitigate motoring costs, or at least make them more predictable, is worthwhile. Maintenance and a degree of mechanical sympathy make a difference, but often breakdowns just happen.”

Warranty Direct cover starts from as little as £15 a month. All policies protect against wear & tear, failures caused by uninsured parts and failures found during a service or MOT.

A new initiative has been launched by the team behind Make and Model – now it’s an automotive servicing and repair sector. The full launch was seen last May of the Who Can Fix My Car (WCFMC), which tries to line up a mechanic or garage for consumers that are need of one by offering superior choice, best price for all automotive and servicing needs and the highest level of service.

Those who provide the these services can range from big nationwide chains, to service centers and even the small independent repair shops and will be able to compete not just on cost but quality and reputation of service they offer. WCFMC will be operating locally so that when consumers that post work that needs to be done the site will automatically let the nearby service providers know about the possible work so they can place a bid. The communications to start are through the site’s confidential internal messaging system in order to provide privacy for those using the service.

Consumers can then select and converse with mechanics or garages who contact them with interest in carrying out the required work via the site. Over time, the service providers will be able to, and indeed are encouraged to, build a track record by asking consumers to leave reviews and feedback with regards to the quality of service experienced. As the business matures the mechanics and garages offering the best service at the best price should reap the benefits of increased interest in their availability.

As is often the case, many car owners do not know where to start when trying to tackle a car-related issue. WCFMC has a wide range of sections that makes posting a job and contacting local trusted mechanics easy, quick and hassle-free. So whether a consumer needs a standard service, requires accident repairs or wants more information about parts and accessories nearby, WCFMC will prove to be a useful resource

According to newly released data one in three motorist in Britain will share an unwanted repair bill of £1.6bn this year, and some face repair bills of a whopping £7,239. The analysis was provided by Warranty Direct, who are the largest direct providers of consumer warranties in the UK. It also shows that one third of the 3-10 year old vehicles registered with the DVLA will suffer some kind of mechanical failure during the next year.

The average garage bill is currently £335, the common faults being electrical. Warranty Direct’s website, Reliablilityindex.com is the only resource where you can check out the inconvenience, cost and rate of failure across thousands of different models of cars. It shows that the highest average bills for repair are those for the Mercedes Benz SL from 2002 onwards, costing £742.10. The Mazda 3, 2004-2009 also has a hefty repair bill of £655.24

According to Warranty Direct, which studied more than 50,000 policies, one in three vehicles will develop a mechanical failure during any 12-month period. However, the figure varies dramatically depending on the make and model. For example, the frequency of failure on a Honda Civic is 8 per cent compared to 61 per cent for a Renault Grand Scenic.

Duncan McClure Fisher of Warranty Direct said: “It’s part and parcel of car ownership that, at some stage, something will go wrong. Even on the most reliable of cars, things still break sometimes.

“The worst part is the unknown – failure could happen at any time and, unfortunately, as we’re all driving evermore complex vehicles, the cost of repair is reflected.”

Warranty Direct cover starts from as little as £15 a month.

Have you ever driven past a car broken down by the side of the road with the bonnet up and a rather flustered person looking into the engine?

The answer to this question is most likely to be yes.

Now think back to the last time you saw someone broken down and try to remember what your first thought was. If I had breakdown cover, I know mine would be ‘I wonder if they have breakdown cover’.

If I didn’t have breakdown cover, my first thought would probably be, ‘that’s going to be an expensive day for that driver’.

Breakdown cover can prove to be worth its weight in gold in the event of a breakdown and has the potential to save you a lot of money if you ever do break down.

Therefore, we thought we would bring you our top tips to consider when you look for your next breakdown cover policy.

1. Think about where and when you are most likely to need your breakdown cover. If you only drive your car around the town in which you live, you would probably look for basic to comprehensive cover. If you drive further afield on a regular basis, you might be better off with a comprehensive to premium policy.

2. Look for any discounts the provider is offering. Some offer online discounts of around 30-40% and this could prove useful in reducing the price of your policy.

3. Remember that even the most basic of breakdown cover policies will usually be better than having no policy at all.

According to the RAC, the average cost of a call-out charge for a private recovery levied by an independent recovery contractor is £50. You will then be charged around £1.50 per return mile (the independent recovery contractor will charge you per mile from when they leave the depot until they get back to the depot) to be towed. This would result in a cost of £188.13 for one call out and to be towed 10 miles (use our breakdown cover calculator to test this out). When you consider that basic breakdown cover policies start from as little as £25 a year, you can really see why having some breakdown cover will likely be better than having none at all.
