Motorbikes, motorcycles, Harley’s, however you describe them, these 2 wheeled warriors of the road have been toys for boys since time immemorial. They were at one time the ultimate symbol of teenage rebellion, and if you wanted to be cool, you had to have a motorbike. This passion has waned little over the years, but the leathers and customised helmets have since come more to represent safety than to show the biker as a leather clad rebel.

There is a huge market out there for those who enjoy buying up battered old bikes that have long past their sell buy date and bringing them back to their former glory. Thousands enjoy this as a hobby, and the self satisfaction of seeing a rusted old wreck being transformed into a roadworthy vehicle complete with shining chrome gives the restorer the ultimate sense of self satisfaction.

You can pick up old bikes from many different places; scrap yards, small ads and the internet are the most popular, and the same places also provide an Aladdin’s cave of various parts and embellishments to help you make your latest project a king of the roads. When restoring old bikes it is advisable to stick to well known names as the parts will be a lot easier to track down.

A simple internet search of Suzuki motorcycle parts or Yamaha motorcycle parts will bring up thousands of results and it is then just a case tracking down the part you want and seeing if it is in your locale so you can pick it up or ordering it online and having it delivered. There are many bikes that are sadly past redemption, and tracking down those being sold for spares or repair is also a cost effective way of locating parts. Restoring old bikes using the original parts is a great hobby that invokes both pride and satisfaction.

With spring weather finally on its way motorcyclists will soon be taking the covers off their bikes and giving them a quick tune-up before they head out for their first rides of 2011. Although motorcyclists only make up a small percentage of the road travel in the UK, they unfortunately are involved in a very high number of deadly accidents on the roads. According to the Department of Transport they are involved in 10% of all fatal and serious accidents.

In an attempt to make the public and the riders themselves more aware of how vulnerable motorcyclists are on the road the government has once again launched its ‘Think Bike’ campaign from 2006.
Shock value

Statistics suggest that despite a visually striking campaign on the television, motorists are still having trouble recognising the dangers that motorcyclists face on a daily basis. “Unfortunately, we still represent a lot of clients who have been involved in a serious motorcycle accident,” comments Matt Dixon of serious accident claims specialists Sherrington Law. “While some drivers may have become more aware of the vulnerability of motorcyclists through the advertising campaign, the majority of car drivers don’t realise just how serious the message is until they are actually involved in a collision with a motorcyclist themselves. It seems that the ‘shock value’ of some adverts created by the DoT has been wasted on an apathetic driving public,” he adds.

One of the complaints about the campaign is that it appears to be aimed more towards motorcyclists themselves, rather than four-wheeled road users. Critics believe that this is a case of the DoT ‘preaching to the converted’, as motorcyclists already know how vulnerable they are. Another problem is the image that ‘public safety information films’ have with viewers. “Most people tend to ‘zone out’ when they see a public safety advert, believing it doesn’t apply to them,” says Matt Dixon. “Unless they ride a motorcycle themselves, the majority of the viewing public believe that the onus of responsibility is still on the motorcyclist and not the car driver. The truth is that everyone using Britain’s roads should be aware of all road users and not just other cars,” he adds.

A waste of money?

So is the campaign a waste of money? Those dealing with the consequences of a serious motorcycle accident and the devastating effect they can have on an entire family’s lives think not. “If the campaign saves just one life from being wrecked by a moment’s inattention on the part of another driver, then it’s worthwhile,” believes Matt Dixon of Sherrington Law. “It’s taken people nearly 40 years to get the message about wearing seatbelts in cars, so it may be that the Think Bike campaign just needs more time to really connect with the public. Perhaps showing the long-term consequences of pulling out in front of a motorcyclist at a junction might drive the message home a little more powerfully. If people could actually see what it means to have to deal with a serious head or spinal injury for the rest of your life, they may be a little more considerate towards their two-wheeled colleagues on the road,” he concludes.

Bikes for sale are set to change dramatically. The new buzz word in the industry is e-motorbikes. For the last year or so electric superbikes have become big news. The launch of the impressive Mission One, made by Mission Motors, has created a realisation in the industry that motorbikes are well suited to embrace electric motor technology. However a new manufacturer has launched a bike that could surpass the Mission One.

The Mission One, run completely from electric batteries, clocked an impressive 161 mph on a speed test and showed the world that electric motorbikes can be powerful and sexy. The problem with the mission one is that it has very expensive price tag to go with the cutting edge technology. At $69,000 you have to be very wealthy to move into the new era of motorbike technology. However Roehr Motorcycles has just announced the eRoehr. An electric motorbike made for the mass-market. Prices start from $14,995 for the eSupersport. The eSupersport gives 48 horsepower at 8000 rpm with a 105 pound-feet of torque. The eSuperbike is the same bike but with twice the motors, twice the power, for twice the price. In a great idea by the Roehr team you can upgrade the eSupersport to the eSuperbike specifications after you have tested out the electric bike and decided whether you need more power. The Roehr team have also gone further with a promise that the bike 100% maintenance free and the company claim that it ran for 10 years non-stop. If true this means that finding and haggling for motorcycle spares will be a thing of the past.

The future of biking could well be electric.
