Kids protest speeding motorists

speedSheffield pupils have gone into the streets in an effort to get motorists to slow down within their school zone.  The students are from Firshill Community Primary School and were spurred to action after a handful of collisions happened near their Pitsmoor school building on the corner of Scott Road and Barnsley Road.

They are working together with the Sheffield Council road safety team staff in order to catch speeders via a speed gun.  In the classroom they have been learning about the dangers of speeding and how long it can take a car to slow down dependent on the speed in which it travels.

Outside of the school, the Sheffield Council has placed vehicle activated signs that warn motorists to reduce their speed as a ‘slow down’ warning will flash if a driver is over the speed limit.

Head of transport and highways at Sheffield Council, John Bann, stated that residents from all over Sheffield complain about speeders and that the council is committed to addressing the problem and making the roads safer.  Bann added that the city has taken action such as the signs and teaching students about speeding in order to get the message across into family units where adults drive.

Bann added that teaching children about how to be safe on the road is very important because if lessons are started at an early age they are more likely to stick with a child as they grow, mature, and become drivers themselves.
