Volunteer speeding wardens to be used to slow traffic

The dangerous actions of some motorists has left Consett residents frustrated and concerned. Motorists have been displaying anti-social behavior that many people say could be life-threatening. Locals from Consett in Co Durham are working together with the police force in order to catch the speeding drivers and to help in promoting safe driving for its residents.

Motorists who are found to be speeding ‘excessively’ could have warning letters sent to them that will remind them of the laws surrounding speeding. Speeding drivers will not be taken to court or fined, however.

Authorities are hoping that the plan may be rolled out throughout the nation to help with the anti-social drivers that are becoming more prevalent in some areas. Some Consett locals will begin to volunteer next month to monitor the flow of traffic and stand by the roadside equipment that will catch speeders. The locals will make a record of the speed that the motorists are traveling at, and if it is excessive, the authorities will receive the model and license plate of the car.

However, the locals will not have any actual law enforcement powers. The police will be training them to act beside camera vans, located throughout the county. Local residents will soon be decided which specific roads will in fact be targeted.

This idea was brought up in a community meeting between several villages, along with police and officials from Durham. The Area Action Partnership claimed that speeding motorists were a big problem and a scheme was needed to help stop them.
